Vizslas - History

Vizslas are as their name implies; the name Vizsla means alert and responsive. The dog was a hunter and companion to the Hungarian people. The Magyar aristocracy valued Vizslas for their outstanding hunting instinct. The Vizsla was crossbred throughout the centuries with other breeds, including hounds. The Vizsla became almost extinct during the First and the Second World Wars. When Russians took control of Hungary, Vizslas were considered symbols of aristocracy and owning a Vizsla became dangerous. Many dogs were smuggled to Austria and other countries.

Vizslas - General Care Tips

The Vizsla's smooth coat is easy to keep in good condition. Vizslas are average shedders. Brush your dog with a bristle brush and bathe with canine shampoo when it is necessary. Keep your Vizsla's nails trimmed.

Vizslas need a lot of opportunity to run and play to have an outlet of their enormous energy. Vizslas should not be allowed to get bored. These highly energetic dogs can become destructive, if left alone.

Vizslas are not recommended for apartment living. These dogs will do well if an average-sized yard is provided and they can run off the leash in a safe area. Vizslas are not high maintenance dogs, but require a strong leader who is able to cope with their temperament.
